The solar-powered light trap has come to the rescue of farmers who are looking for an easy and safe way to get rid of pests. Chandran, a native of Elapalli, has used the new technology in a 6-acre paddy field directed by the Department of Agriculture. Solar light trap helps kill pests and replace chemical pesticides.

Chandran said that solar light traps can be used for cost-effective pest control. The device consists of a bowl, a LED bulb and a solar panel on a tripod. It works on its own with the help of solar energy. The LED bulb will light from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm and its blue light will attract insects. When the flies come close to the device, they are trapped in a poison trap under the bulb, which kills them immediately.

The trap acts in the wee hours of the night when the insect attack is at its peak. Agricultural officials said that since it does not work after 10 at night, beneficial insects will not suffer. The poison trap in the bowl should be changed once every two days.
